Reef, whale sharks and warm water year round
The Tanzanian coast and its islands sit on a reef system that runs the length of the country. Mnemba atoll off Zanzibar, the Pemba channel, and Mafia island with its seasonal whale sharks are the three names that matter most, and water temperatures rarely drop below the mid twenties.
Zanzibar is the convenient option, with dive centres across the north and east coasts and easy access to Mnemba. Pemba is quieter, less developed and better for experienced divers wanting walls and currents. Mafia is the specialist choice, with a marine park, fewer visitors and the whale shark season.
If you are combining diving with a safari, the practical consideration is flying. Do not dive within twenty four hours of a flight, and most safaris involve at least one light aircraft leg, so the diving portion should come at the end with a buffer day.
