The most accessible park from Dar es Salaam
Mikumi is the closest large national park to Dar es Salaam, reachable in about five hours by road, and its Mkata floodplain has an open, Serengeti like character. It is the park most Tanzanians see first and the easiest southern option for travellers short on time or budget.
Mikumi is not trying to be Serengeti and should not be sold as such. What it is, is an honest and affordable park that delivers a real safari within a day of Dar es Salaam, which makes it the natural choice for a short trip, a first safari on a modest budget, or a stop on the way to Ruaha or the Udzungwa mountains.
The main highway to Zambia runs through the park, which is worth knowing. The wildlife is habituated to it, but it does mean the northern section is not wilderness in the way the southern parks are.
