Rainforest hiking and waterfalls, no vehicle required
Udzungwa is a walking park rather than a driving one. It protects a block of the Eastern Arc mountains, one of the most biologically significant forest systems in Africa, and its trails run from lowland forest to the 170 metre Sanje waterfalls and beyond into the highlands.
Trails range from a two hour forest walk to the Sanje waterfall circuit at around five or six hours, up to multi day routes across the plateau that require camping and a booked guide. All walking is with a park guide. The forest is humid and the paths are steep and rooty in places, so proper footwear matters.
Wildlife here is forest wildlife: primates, birds, chameleons, amphibians and an extraordinary range of plants. Anybody expecting large mammals will be disappointed, and anybody interested in how a forest works will not be.
Seasons shift year to year. Treat these as a guide and confirm with your operator.
Drier trails and easier walking.
Wetter and more slippery, but the forest is at its most alive and the falls are full.
One night for Sanje falls. Three for the plateau routes.
